Wheat – lat. Triticum aestivum
Breeding of winter wheat has a long tradition in Bc Institut. Wheat breeding work began in 1947 under guidance of dr. sc. Josip Potočanec who established the model of Bc varieties of wheat.
Present breeding work regarding creation of Bc varieties of winter wheat is based on creation of high-yield genotypes of wide-ranging adaptability and high malleability in diverse agricultural and environmental conditions of production. The selection process was also used to introduce the property of improved grain and flour quality in addition to the high-yield and stable genotype. The results of that work are high-yield and high-quality Bc varieties of winter wheat entirely corresponding to a type of modern wheat variety.
Work of several generations of wheat breeding professionals resulted in recognition of 95 Bc varieties of winter wheat (92 aestivum and 3 durum) and 6 Bc varieties of spring wheat. 54 Bc varieties of winter wheat have been recognised abroad.
