Bc Institut, operates as a scientific research institution for 118 years, developing plant breeding and arable crop seed production as its basic activity.

The programme of breeding and selection of linear hybrid maize began in Botinec near Zagreb. The first maize hybrid, Bc 590, was registered in 1962. The Bc designation is applied to nearly all subsequently registered hybrids even though the maize breeding programme has moved to Rugvica site near Dugo Selo in the meantime.

The true cereals and forage crops breeding programme is performed at the Botinec site.

The results in the breeding programmes has been followed by development of seed production, improvement of high-quality seeds, marketing and sales.
