MAIZE

Corn/Maize – lat. Zea mays

Over a sixty-year period, maize breeding professionals have achieved extraordinary results in creation of Bc hybrids of maize. A large number of high-yield linear hybrids of maize has been registered and used in Croatian production and abroad.

The permanent objective of maize breeding is to create new superior hybrids for various purposes of use in diverse agricultural and environmental conditions of farming.

Maize breeding is a scientific research process taking place based on a large number of samples in climatologically different years. The main objective of the breeding professionals is to obtain self-fertilising lines and discover their best F1 hybrid combinations. Maize hybrids are required to provide high and stable yields and quality. Grain yield is the most significant property conditioned by a large number of genes, and it depends on the level of selection of other significant properties, such as stem strength, resistance against and tolerance for diseases and pests and stressful environment conditions. All our hybrids have been created through standard breeding methods without genetic manipulation.

Since recognition of the first Bc hybrid of maize (Bc 590, in 1961/62) over 300 hybrids have been recognised through scientific work of several generations of breeding professionals (FAO 100 – 800). All hybrids which are in production also are a part of European variety list, and most in other countries (Serbia, Turkey, Iran, Ukraine, Russia, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Macedonia, Kosovo, Kazakhstan, Albania).

Thanks to origin qualitative properties, method of perfection, treatment and seed packaging, Bc hybrids of maize have been awarded prestigious “Croatian Quality” sign by the Croatian Chamber of Economy. The quality sign represents a guarantee that the product possesses exceptional quality.
