OBJECTIVES OF BREEDING OF TRUE CEREALS
True Cereals and Forage Crops Department maintains continuity of breeding of true cereals over a long period of time. Using contemporary achievements of genetics and plant breeding, high-yield and high-quality varieties, achieving a positive shift in production, are being created. Thanks to wide-ranging adaptability and malleability in various agro-environmental conditions of production, these varieties are becoming desirable to agricultural producers throughout Croatia and abroad where some of them are recognised and accepted as well.
There are two basic objectives of breeding of true cereals by Bc Institut. The first and long-term objective represents a continuation of the process of maintenance and expansion of genetic variability of materials. The second objective is creation of modern and competitive varieties capable of bringing something new and special to agricultural production through their potential and capabilities as well as achieved results. That is achieved by following trends occurring in the assortment and by having a clear vision for the future. In creation of the new varieties, efforts are made towards increases of crop yield, preservation of yield stability through breeding against the most significant diseases and intensive work to improve purpose-oriented quality. Efforts are made continuously regarding improvement of stem strength in order to create varieties with the maximum resistance to lodging possible. The programmes also entail further shortening of vegetation periods in order to achieve the earliest possible genotypes of lower habitus and high hectolitre mass as well as all other physical properties of grain.
In breeding work performed in the past, recognisable Bc varieties of true cereals have been created and they have provided a significant contribution to advances in farm production, cattle farming and food industry.
